As an R&D Engineer at ABB in Switzerland, you will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining test infrastructures for Research & Development activities within the Electrification and Smart Power Division. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional teams, contribute to product development, and ensure technical excellence in a dynamic, hands-on laboratory environment.

Tasks

  • Take ownership of designing, developing, and maintaining electrical test infrastructures for low-voltage three-phase systems, supporting product development, validation, and certification activities in accordance with IEC and UL standards.
  • Develop and validate embedded firmware and control solutions, including C-based applications and PLC programming, for laboratory and testing environments.
  • Plan and execute functional, performance, and safety testing on hardware prototypes and test setups, ensuring reliable operation and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to define requirements, solve technical challenges, and maintain accurate technical documentation throughout the development lifecycle.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Experience in embedded firmware development using C for microcontroller- or microprocessor-based systems is essential.
  • Knowledge of low-voltage three-phase electrical systems, power distribution, power conversion, or UPS technologies is required.
  • Experience in electrical design, testing, validation, or commissioning of electrical and electronic systems is necessary.
  • Familiarity with PLC programming and industrial automation concepts is expected.
  • Ability to analyse technical requirements, troubleshoot complex issues, and work in a hands-on laboratory environment is important.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams, are required.
  • Professional proficiency in English is necessary; additional language skills are considered an advantage.
