As an R&D Engineer at ABB in Switzerland, you will play a pivotal role in validating and customising OEM single-phase and three-phase low-voltage Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) for mission-critical power protection applications. You will contribute to ABB’s UPS product initiatives, collaborating with internal teams and external partners to ensure compliance with industry standards. The position offers a hybrid work model and opportunities to drive innovation, support product development, and contribute to the advancement of energy-efficient solutions.

Tasks

  • Lead technical validation and customisation of OEM 1ph and 3ph low voltage Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS), as well as batteries and accessories.
  • Manage test partners such as UL, Intertek, Dekra, and Eurofins to scope and plan test programmes to demonstrate compliance with applicable IEC or UL standards.
  • Take ownership of the technical specifications of assigned products and support the Product Manager in developing the business case for product development.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions related to issues found during qualification testing and issues identified at customer sites.
  • Maintain awareness of state-of-the-art technologies and collaborate with the research centre in Switzerland and other ABB stakeholders to identify potential new UPS technologies.

Requirements

  • A Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • Experience working with power electronic systems is required.
  • Experience in the use of various measuring equipment in a laboratory environment is necessary.
  • Knowledge of product regulations and standards, including IEC and UL, is essential.
  • Experience working with external laboratories and certification bodies is required.
  • Knowledge of ECNs (Engineering Change Notifications), BOMs (Bills of Materials), and documentation systems is important.
  • Experience with failure investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Agile methodology is an advantage.
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory.
